From writing songs and creating a talk show to producing Science Videos

We will be sharing a progression of collaborations with Craig Cardiff and Youth Ottawa, starting with songwriting with Craig, then my class interviewing Craig’s co-op student to create a talk show, culminating in a collaborative project of science videos we wrote and recorded that Craig’s students animated. We will highlight experiential learning and collaboration between elementary and secondary panels, as well as the value of connecting to folks outside the school walls to create richer and more authentic opportunities for students.

STEAM Project: Planning a Paper City

The grade 8 class has been enjoying a multi-step project! We have finished part 1 of the project: planning a city using various inspirations such as Mythical, Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, or Futuristic-Sustainable. There were 5 groups, and the groups were required to create a 2D sketch and a 3D model (using Minecraft Edu). They presented a proposal to the "investors" (aka their Visual Arts teacher, English teacher, Educational Assistant, Vice Principal/Principal, and a Master's student from the Queen's University City Planning Program). Part 2 is underway. They will be using scale factor (grade 8 Math curriculum) to calculate the size of their city and then begin to build a paper city.

    Rebecca Clark-Kipfer

My name is Rebecca - I teach senior students in a systems class (GLP). The whole goal is to support students in their transitions, and we have been trying to find experiential ways to do this. I have been teaching for 8 years, and most of it has been in special education; from the GLP to students in treatment programs across the city. These experiences have made me want to shift the way the classroom works, so join us to learn more!

Non Traditional Teaching Approaches In Science & Biology

Using a non-traditional, portfolio-based, thinking classroom teaching / learning approach in the classroom can make every difference in the experience that a student has in the classroom.  This approach allows choice, space for personal expression and promotes critical thinking in the classroom.  I will share the basics of the approach and you will get to hear from students about how this approach went for them, the choices they got to make and the benefits they found in this setting

During the Covid pandemic, we wanted to make a product that is relaxing and calmming.Through Experiential Learning, we were approached by Junior Achievement Ottawa to create a company. So, our grade 9/10 culinary and baking class at Sir Guy Carleton SS (OCDSB) created a company with Junior Achievement Canada that makes scented, essential oil, soy wax balms and sachets. We are called daBALMM!We dried over 200 kg of apples, oranges and cranberries in order to craft our products! As we are students, we figured apples also represent growth and the seeds of knowledge. Our goal is to prove that high school students can create and run a successful business. Our culinary and baking teacher, Ms. Vorobej, lent us support and mental well-being and she also smelled a lot of daBALMM products along the way.;);)In the end, we sold over $2000.00 worth of product and donated $400 to the Ottawa Food bank!
