We will be sharing a progression of collaborations with Craig Cardiff and Youth Ottawa, starting with songwriting with Craig, then my class interviewing Craig’s co-op student to create a talk show, culminating in a collaborative project of science videos we wrote and recorded that Craig’s students animated. We will highlight experiential learning and collaboration between elementary and secondary panels, as well as the value of connecting to folks outside the school walls to create richer and more authentic opportunities for students.

The grade 8 class has been enjoying a multi-step project! We have finished part 1 of the project: planning a city using various inspirations such as Mythical, Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, or Futuristic-Sustainable. There were 5 groups, and the groups were required to create a 2D sketch and a 3D model (using Minecraft Edu). They presented a proposal to the "investors" (aka their Visual Arts teacher, English teacher, Educational Assistant, Vice Principal/Principal, and a Master's student from the Queen's University City Planning Program). Part 2 is underway. They will be using scale factor (grade 8 Math curriculum) to calculate the size of their city and then begin to build a paper city.

We will be presenting the Author's Journey we took from not knowing how to write our sounds to publish our very own books to help our kindergarten pals prepare for Grade 1 Early French Immersion. We will share all of the people we've met and the places we've visited to help us along the way and will show our audiences the tools and strategies we used and perfected to help us throughout our first-ever authoring experience.

Music departments across Ontario have taken a huge hit because of pandemic restrictions. It will take us many years to regrow once strong programs. We can use some of the technology we utilized when classes were put online to improve musicianship in our classes. I will outline some of the technology that worked well online but still has great uses for in-person application. Lani Sommers with video feedback from members of the Lisgar C.I. Students design, compete for best design and then build their own lab computers. A view into an authentic learning experience using design thinking methodology. We'll cover how students can work in groups to i) identify the needs that exist in the lab when replacing old computers ii) identify parts (processor, motherboard, storage, case, etc..) and weight benefits vs. cost iii) consider multiple vendors iv) defend their designs in front of a panel of judges and then v) build their own lab computers (including installing an operating system). We'll also look at ties to the business and technology SHSMs.

Our students collaborated with Chief Engineer of IBM Space X, Naeem Altaf in launching a CUBEsat into Space. Our students help develop the marketing materials for the launch of the First Cubesat which will be interactable as an Edge Computing device by our students. Students in the fall will be the first group of students ever to collect real time data from space using our cubesat device. Students will collect data, images and sound data and use Unreal Engine to process the data visually. In our first phase, this project saw students develop their game design skills which include coding, art skills and virtual production skills. Our goal this year will be to develop a Virtual Production video using the Digital Twin we built in collaboration with a Spring Charter School from the US. In our presentation you will hear about our progress up to date in our project.

Using a non-traditional, portfolio-based, thinking classroom teaching / learning approach in the classroom can make every difference in the experience that a student has in the classroom. This approach allows choice, space for personal expression and promotes critical thinking in the classroom. I will share the basics of the approach and you will get to hear from students about how this approach went for them, the choices they got to make and the benefits they found in this setting
